Andes Opening Day

After a mostly non-existent 2020 ski season, several ski resorts in Chile have opened for the 2021 ski season.  El Colorado, Valle Nevado, Corralco, La Parva and Nevados de Chillán are among those open.  These late-June/ early-July openings are a bit later than normal, however, locals are stoked to be back on snow. Currently, conditions are mainly machine groomed trails […]

Trip Report: Santa Teresa, Farellones, Chile

https://www.instagram.com/p/CEiI1muDuu9/ Report from Tuesday 24th August Short but tight, that was the way our trip to Santa Teresa went with my touring buddy Gabriel Lobos. Farellones continue to host good snow on the southern slopes and the occasional snowfall keeps visiting the Central Andes. Chile remains in quarantine and with a curfew throughout the country, however, the Andes are always […]

Hometown Mountain Shoutout: El Colorado, Farellones, Chile

Andes Mountain, El Colorado, Farellones, Chile

In the corner of the world, there is a country that was born from the wide Pacific Ocean, it walks through desert and forests and finally rises on the high peaks of the Andes mountains. Chile is a long ski of 2,672-miles (4,300km) located in the South East of South America and it’s considered one the best places to do […]

El Colorado Resort, Chile to CLOSE This Week Due to Lack of Snow

Chile, lack of snow, resorts closed

For the second consecutive season, Chilean resort El Colorado has announced that they will be closing early due to weather conditions. The lifts will stop turning on September 8th. Historically, Chilean resorts predict opening right through to October, but it is increasingly becoming the norm that they don’t even make it through mid-September.  Closing days at El Colorado the previous 5-years […]

How-To: Do South America Ski Trip on a Budget

ski valle nevado

The best part about the end of the North American ski season is the start of the South American winter. The ideal year for any skier is splitting time between hemispheres to get as much snow as possible. Valle Nevado, Chile Snow Update: No New Snow in 2 Weeks

Valle Nevado, Chile snow report 2015

This means either you ski the most recently groomed run possible, or go looking for bits of off piste like lower slopes that aren’t too hacked up and get warm enough to soften, or those snaking drift lines at higher altitudes where the wind packs the snow smooth and chalky. I skied Valle Nevado from La Parva yesterday and had a fun day in spite of a lack of grooming (which makes a big difference). While I try to avoid bashing ski areas, some constructive criticism is needed. VN has […]

El Colorado, Chile Conditions Report: It Just Keeps Snowing…

Our day in El Colorado last thursday was a windless bright sunny day with cumulus clouds billowing below. 5-10 cm had fallen at the end of Wednesday, not really covering the prior days tracks, but providing an icing to the cake, and making the whole mountain skiable. From the top of Cono Este (which could be the best biggest bang for your buck lift if it weren’t an ancient t-bar), the […]

Monster Storm Slamming South America Now | Ski Resort Snow Total & Photo Tour:

portillo powder chile

Chile and Argentina are getting hammered right now. Some weather men are saying this may be the largest storm to hit central Chile in the past 5 years. Originally, central Chile had 19-feet of snow forecast in 4 days this week. It likely won’t add up that high, but it’s still gonna be deep and already is. It’s starting to appear that El Nino is kicking in South America and this very well may be the year to get yourself down to Chile & Argentina and start taking advantage of it. SASS Global Travel‘s flagship SASS Argentina program is poised and ready to get you down here and stuff you into the big powder […]

El Colorado, Chile Conditions Report: Fast, Rocky and Firm

Two weeks ago El Colorado and most of Central Chile received their first significant snowfall of the season, finally allowing the resorts to open after a long wait. Nearly two weeks later though without snow and El Colorado and neighboring Valle Nevada and La Parva are in dire need of snow once more. Over the weekend El Colorado was fast and icy, half the time it was a slide for life rather than actually making turns. None the less, skiing […]

Finally, A Northern Chile Ski Resort OPENS After Monster Storm

Vale Nevado ski resort in northern Chile with new snow yesterday.

Over the weekend, northern Chile and Argentina were hit by an Atmospheric River event (a big storm) that dropped up to 63-inches of snow on some ski resorts. Not one northern Chile ski resort was open last week as they were all bone dry and brown. This week, they should all be able to open starting with El Colorado who got it together first and opened up today. Other northern Chile ski resorts that should open this week […]

Portillo, Chile still doesn’t have a flake of snow right now. They hoped to open by June 20th, then July 9th, and now they’ve pushed their opening date back to To Be Determined since there is still no snow and no snow in the forecast. Portillo isn’t alone in its lack of snow. Valle Nevado, Farallones, El Colorado, La Parva, and Ski Arpa are all currently without snow. Northern Chile has been experiencing a drought since 2007 and it appears to be continuing. Southern Chile is doing better. taking into account the most recent weather forecast and absence of snow for the […]

Chilean Freeskiing Championships CANCELED Due to Lack of Snow:

The Chilean Freeskiing Championships was going to be held at El Colorado, Chile. As of August 11th, the Championships have been canceled. Northern Chile is having a dismal year thus far. Portillo, El Colorado, La Parva, and Valle Nevado are all looking very thin in the snow department. There is very little snow and very high temperatures. Most of these ski resorts are at the same latitude as Los Angeles, CA. They have snow in the flats, but anything steep is basically all rock. Here is a conditions update from professional freeskier Chopo Diaz from Valle […]
