Portillo, Chile Season Update Video: June, July & August editor’s note: Um… Portillo has way sicker terrain than we thought it did. Might be time to make a trip to Portillo… by Andrew Rumph We started out with a great start of the season with tons of snow in June but then it didn’t snow for about 3 weeks in July. The end of July we had three storms and conditions were amazing. The best day of the season was a week and a half ago on Aug. 1st. The day after we had a huge wind event and all of the new snow was blown away and we were left with the rock hard base. Now we are in a freeze thaw […] Conditions Report Andrew Rumph | August 12, 2014 0 Comments
Portillo, Chile Conditions Report & Photo Tour: I skied Portillo from July 26 to August 1. Sorry for the late posting, but the moral of the story remains the same: book your flight to Santiago. Although this isn’t the best season for snow at Portillo, with parts of Chile in a drought, the conditions were awesome. The hotel is world class, as are the staff and ski instructors, who I believe are some of the best ski instructors from all over the world, gathered in one place. Maybe it’s all the orange signs in front of Andarivel Roca […] Conditions Report Guest Author | August 6, 2014 0 Comments

US Ski Team Racing Efforts THWARTED by Large Powder Storm in Portillo, Chile on Saturday… The US Ski Team’s downhill racing efforts were viciously thwarted in Chile over the weekend by a nasty snowstorm that forced them to stop racing and ski deep powder all day long. We talked to US Ski Team member and local Squaw ripper, Travis Ganong, on Saturday to get a feel for just how horrible he was feeling about the huge dump of powder snow at Portillo, Chile. We just had 3 simple questions: SB: How much snow did Portillo get? Travis: The Portillo website was reporting […] Conditions Report SnowBrains | September 23, 2013 3 Comments

Why is Portillo Called “The Cruiseship”? | Photo Tour One of the things that makes Portillo, Chile so darn special is it’s cruise ship like feel. The resort is so remote that it is it’s own entity, far from any town, or city, excluding the Chilean army barracks just down the highway. The resort has no “ski town” associated with it. There is an absence of winding suburb-like streets […] Bevan Waite | August 8, 2013 2 Comments
