After a week of snowfall we recieved about 1.2 meters of the goods. On new years it cleared up for the first time for a whole day since it started to snow. It was very cold up to -18 C the beginning of the week but by new years it was plus Degrees on the mountain. Central Oregonโ€™s Secret Peaks | Cat Skiing Mount Bailey

Central Oregon is the backwoods. In a good way. Smack in the middle of weathered mountains are a small chain of volcanic peaks rising 8000-9000 feet. Mount Bailey has several cirques facing various aspects carved out by glaciers. With around 3000 skiable vertical feet and 360 degree aspect options the mountain is a skierโ€™s playground. Conditions in Central Oregon have been incredibly dry this year. While Bachelor is 100 miles away with a base of 133โ€, Bailey has a base of only 85โ€. Talking with one of our guides, Oz, he mentioned that in his 30+ years of working for the cat operation this is the driest winter he can recall. Similar stories were heard from the cat driver [โ€ฆ]

Sun, Bootpacks, and Bears | Jakeโ€™s Peak Tour 3/13/14

After convincing my friend Reza to ditch his plans for a southerly approach to Jakeโ€™s peak โ€“ accessed from Emerald Bay and most likely requiring the use of ice-axes and crampons โ€“ we settled for the main route. The main route to Jakeโ€™s peak can be accessed from Highway 89 just south of the headquarters for D. L. Bliss State Park. We left the car at a little past 8AM and started boot hiking straight up the face as there was not enough snow in the lower elevations. After an hour of boot hiking, which included some scary rock scrambling and lots of bushwhacking, we finally made it to [โ€ฆ]

Jackson Hole, WY Conditions Report | Sun, Powder and Waffles | 3/12/14

Whatโ€™s better than Apres? The obvious answer would be a little Pre-pres. Thatโ€™s where Corbetโ€™s Cabin comes into play. After a hard charging morning of a little pow and go seek looking for the remaining stashes ones stomach requires โ€œWorld Famous Wafflesโ€ served hot and fresh at 10,450 feet. My personal preference is Strawberry, however Corbetโ€™s has several steamy mouth-watering varieties to choose from. As with any post powder day the lines for the lifts were minimal to non-existent which left many powder [โ€ฆ]

Sad news coming from our solar system today. Comet ISON, a large comet that astronomers were hoping would be so bright it would be easily visible in December 2013, has died. Alpine Meadows Conditions Report | Good Snow, Strong Sun, Sweet Band | Photo Tour

Alpine Meadows is the last ski resort open in Lake Tahoe.  While all the hardcore boys are down in the Eastern Sierras (more reports from there soon) the easy goinโ€™ skier types got a treat today at Alpine. The snow soften up at about 9am and stayed fun all day.  About 11am it got a little busy, then died down [โ€ฆ]
