#9 Ketchum, ID

Ketchum, ID, is nestled next to Sun Valley Resort, which is one of the best resorts in North America. It is also home to endless recreation in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area which also boasts breathtaking scenery. Ketchum itself is a quaint and charming town with a vibrant arts scene, unique shops, and a wide range of dining options.

There may have been some recency bias here as Mammoth just had a record-setting snowfall year and stayed open for an astonishing 275 days. Even without that, Mammoth Lakes has long been the center of snow sports in winter and all kinds of outdoor activities in summer. The skiing is fantastic with huge and varied terrain. Friendly, vibrant, charming, and sporty are the words used to describe this popular town.

Sure, the skiing is good at Telluride, but the town also offers classy boutiques, family-owned restaurants, and can’t-miss bars for après-ski drinks. It has historic charm, low crowds, and spectacular scenery. There is also a free gondola that connects the town to the mountain village, making it easy to get back and forth from the mountain to town.

Jackson is the only incorporated town in the Jackson Hole Valley. Not only can you access multiple ski resorts with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King Mountain, and Grand Targhee, but you have access to two national parks: Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

The town of Jackson has preserved its Western heritage, and residents can experience a unique blend of cowboy culture and modern ski town amenities. After a day on the slopes, it offers a lively apres-ski scene with plenty of restaurants, bars, and entertainment options.

Considered by some as “the last great Colorado ski town,” Crested Butte has worked to limit development and support locally owned enterprises. It has retained its authentic, historic charm with colorful Victorian buildings, giving it a unique character and a cozy ambiance. There is also a diverse selection of restaurants, bars, and breweries for after a full day on the slopes.

Whistler is one of the largest resorts in North America, but it is the friendly town that completes the area and makes it world famous. Located right at the base of two mountains makes it hard to beat.

There are also a multitude of hot springs in the area which are one of Steamboat Springs’ most significant claims to fame. They are believed to possess powerful healing properties.
