We recently reached out to our loyal readers to ask the question, “What are your favorite independently owned mom-and-pop ski areas?” Here’s a list of the top responses. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy reading.

  1. Silverton Mountain, CO

Properly described as “a unique mountain experience,” Silverton operates unlike any other ski resort in the U.S. Silverton Mountain has been owned and operated by Aaron and Jenny Brill since January 19, 2002, when they bought a chairlift from Mammoth Mountain and opened for business. Known for its uber steeps, this mountain is undoubtedly geared towards experts. And with its incredible access to backcountry options including both hiking and Heli-ski options, the potential tilts toward limitless.

Vail Resorts Day Ticket Prices See 15% Increase for 2022/23

Day tickets for Vail Resorts’ ski areas are now online and available to purchase, giving us the opportunity to see how much they’re going to cost. We’ve not yet reached $300, but we’re not that far off.

The Skiing Experience

The ski industry changes every year. New technology. New designs. New gear. You name it. And the ski resorts are changing, too. You see improvements to guest services, amenities, and online conveniences being made all across the country. But what rarely seems to change is the skiing experience itself.

As tough as it is to define a list of ‘up-and-coming’ ski areas, we chose to identify those that are showing signs of advancement and ambitious development of the true skiing experience. While no list is perfect, and this one undoubtedly misses a few, we are excited to share a very nice collection of candidates. We hope you enjoy reading.

Sandia Peak Ski Area, NM, Won’t Open For 2nd Consecutive Winter | Future of the Resort Under Discussion

Sandia Peak Ski Area, NM, will not open for the second consecutive year due to reduced snowfall, staffing issues, and financial difficulties, Alaina Mencinger writes for the Albuquerque Journal.

California Ski Areas Under Threat From Wildfire | Sprinklers Have Been Activated

Big Bear and Snow Summit ski areas in California are currently under threat from the Radford Fire that started around 1:30 pm yesterday (Monday, September 5th). The cause is still unknown.
