After an unusually slow start to the season at California’s Mammoth Mountain, the waiting game has finally come to an end. Following record-breaking snowfall last year, the dry spell that welcomed the 2023/2024 winter season had California locals putting their patience to the test, wondering when the long-awaited low-pressure system would make its way to the Sierras. With prayers to the snow gods finally being heard, it’s safe to say winter has made its grand debut.

Ringing in the new year with a bang, the most recent round of storms that hit California dropped significant precipitation, with the first round of storms delivering 27 inches at the summit of Mammoth. Breaking the cycle and opening the storm door, the pattern of weather through the month of January gifted the mountain with snow totals reaching 80 inches at the summit and 50 inches at the base. From low tide to full swing, ropes are dropping right and left, opening the majority of the terrain, including classic lines like Dropout Chutes. With neighboring resorts, including June Mountain, and Palisades Tahoe reaping the benefits from Miracle January as well, the Sierra snowpack is once again providing the goods.

The highly anticipated new chairlift, Chair 16, is the perfect complement to the improved snowpack, providing easier access to terrain while reducing lines at the Canyon Lodge base area.  The new Doppelmayr D-Line six-pack detachable high-speed chairlift services 25% more guests than the previous lift and features an enclosed top and bottom terminal which helps it to open quicker during deep storm cycles. Positioned slightly to the north, the impact of snow slides from the adjacent Avalanche Chutes will also be reduced. This mountain upgrade is an exciting development for Mammoth and further enhances access to terrain while mitigating weather limitations.
