Three Caught in Avalanche Near Kicking Horse, BC

Heat is coming tomorrow for Utah

Three Saskatchewan men are lucky to be alive after being caught an avalanche near Golden, British Columbia. The size 1.5 avalanche was triggered on Tuesday afternoon around 3 pm MST, on a backcountry run near Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The trio, all in their 20’s, was skiing out of bounds in an area known as Terminator 2 (T2) around 2 p.m. when they triggered the avalanche. They were carried over 3,200 feet down the mountainous terrain, but luckily all three managed to stay above the snow. One of the men was […]

Atomic Automatic 109 Ski Review

For the 2014-2015 season, Atomic has expanded their extremely successful Automatic model into three different widths: a 102, 109 and 117. They still have that Automatic shape you know and love, and now you can choose the size that fits your style and the conditions you ski in most often. The 109 is the most versatile ski in the Automatic lineup. It’s a great ski for any and all snow conditions, and it is light enough to be a good touring ski. It is fun and playful and can also carve, but it is not stiff enough for heavier skiers who like to go fast. I tested the Atomic Automatic 109 in a wide variety of conditions over the course of 40 ski days at Nevados de Chillan, Las Leñas […]

Fickle Snowpack Furor @ Kirkwood last week!

Last week Kirkwood Mountain was graced with a freak massive amount of new snow of…wait for it…3 inches! Given the season so far, that 3 inch storm yields to one of the deepest powder days of the year! With a bluebird forecast the day after the major snow event, I rallied up to the mountain to see what I could find in and beyond the boundaries. Albeit with a firm layer underneath, those 3 in […]

The 3rd Leg Vent – Do You Use It?

Ahhh, the 3rd leg vent. If you’re not using it when touring, you’re missing out. Here’s why: Your crotch is the hottest part of your body when hiking on a warm day and it seriously needs venting. The 2 leg vents on your ski pants aren’t nearly enough to adequately ventilate this potentially fiery area. You need the 3rd leg vent – or more simply put, your fly zip – and you need it bad. Your crotch gets hot because of a few crucial factors: 1. Friction. There’s a lot of friction going on down there. Legs are moving & rubbing against each other. Man parts (if you have them) are rubbing against legs. 2. Heat. Some of the largest muscles in the human body are located in crotchal area. The largest […]

Mt. Bachelor Conditions Report | A Bit Hard, A Bit Fun

This last weekend started with high hopes of making some creamy spring turns from the top of Mt. Bachelor. From a distance, the mountain looked ready for prime shredding, yet little did we know that the looks we got from the car were completely, utterly deceiving. Our first run might have been one of the most disappointing I’ve had in a while; it was an ice rink.I might have been better off with speed skates than skis.

When Is It OK to Bootpack a Skin Track?

When is it OK to bootpack a skin track? Many would say never, but that’s not exactly accurate. Whether you like it or not, there are times when it’s more or less acceptable to bootpack a skin track. It’s not acceptable because it’s the right thing to do. It’s acceptable because it’s gonna happen whether you like it or not. Whether you regulate it or not. Whether you care or not. It’s simply reality. There are only two scenarios where it’s OK to boot pack a skin track… In Jackson Hole, this entire scenario is often flipped. When this occurs, locals will kindly remind you: […]

Atmospheric River to Hit Northern California This Week:

An atmospheric river is forecast to hit Lake Tahoe, CA this week beginning on Thursday. One of the latest weather forecasting models is showing up to 20 inches of rain falling in the Northern Sierra Nevada mountains. This storm may not be an epic one for skiing, but California is currently experiencing an “Exceptional Drought” and we’ll take every drop of rain we can get. Snow levels will be high with the storm. Models are currently suggesting an average snow level of 8,000-feet for the storm. That’s not great for skiing as most Lake Tahoe ski resorts top out at around 8,600-feet. The Mount Rose ski resort and backcountry […]

Why Do So Many People Die Shoveling Snow?

When you think of dangerous winter activities, you probably wouldn’t consider shoveling snow to be on the list — but over 100 people die shoveling each year in the US. A study at the US Nationwide Children’s Hospital recorded 1,647 fatalities from cardiac-related injuries associated with shoveling snow from 1990 to 2006 . Cardiologist Barry Franklin, director of preventative cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation at William Beaumont Hospital, Michigan, lead a team of researchers to study the effects of shoveling. They found that when healthy young men shoveled snow, their heart rate and blood pressure increased more than when they […]

Crystal Mountain Conditions Report | Goodbye, June-uary.

Skiing in the blazing sun and 45 degree weather isn’t what January is usually about. But, this hasn’t been a typical snow year in the PNW. Forecasts called for a high of 39 and ‘broken clouds’ at Crystal Mountain yesterday, but the forecast was wrong. Saturday brought temperatures that stayed in the mid-40’s all day long and clear skies. With the inversion socking in Seattle the sun was a welcome change from the gray […]
