Winter Returns to Salt Lake City

In what has been an unusually warm and dry season, winter could finally be returning to the mountains of Utah. This past weekend brought a storm to parts of Utah, bringing snow to the Northern Wasatch range. Deer Valley, Canyons, and Park City all received between 5 – 7 inches, while Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude each got about a foot of fresh powder. The storm brought snow to Utah’s southern valleys, the first time since January. On Monday morning, snow reports saw 2-3 inches near Lake Powell, 5 inches at Kanab, 9 inches at Kodachrome Basin Park, and 11 inches in Cedar City. And there’s more to come.

“Winter of Terror” (1950-51): 265 Avalanche Deaths in the Alps

In the winter of 1950-51, a previously unrecorded number of avalanches rocked the Swiss-Austrian Alps, killing over 265 people in the span of three months. Coined the “Winter of Terror”, this series of 649 avalanches destroyed over 900 buildings and thousands of acres of forests. This period is thought to be a result of atypical weather conditions in the Alps: high precipitation due to the meeting of an Atlantic warm front, with a polar cold front resulted in 10-15 ft of snowfall in a two-to-three-day period. Over 40,000 people were buried under snow over the 1950-51 season.

Mayor Tells Bostonians to Stop Jumping from Windows

After four huge storms have slammed Boston with 8 feet of snow, the city’s residents are starting to get a little stir-crazy. A new social media challenge has spread: the #BostonBlizzardChallenge has “daredevils” leaping from windows into the enormous snow piles below. Mayor Martin Walsh made a statement earlier this week asking residents to “stop their nonsense” and act responsibly.“It’s a foolish thing to do and you could kill yourself,” he said.

Fenway Park Buried in 3 Feet of Snow

With just two months until opening day, the Red Sox better pray for warm weather. Fenway Park is buried under 3 to 4 feet of snow, following Boston’s snowiest 30-day period in history. While the Red Sox head down to Fort Myers for spring training, Boston will be digging out after another storm on Saturday and Sunday. Huge amounts of snow have made for rare avalanche conditions in snow piles on the streets of Boston. Bean Town has seen almost 72 inches in the span of 18 days, making it the ninth snowiest winter in the city’s history.

“Avalanche Conditions” in Boston

A huge dump in Boston is creating avalanche conditions adjacent to sidewalks. From an email, “It’s actually a pretty scary situation here in Boston, there’s a pretty a serious instability in the snow pack, we’re seeing these massive avalanche crowns, and anything on even moderate slopes are sliding with minimal pressure. It’s so rare in the east that people don’t know how to handle it, notice a few pics of the large crown’s I took. We’re experiencing these massive slides into already shoveled sidewalks and roads, and people are […]

VT Backcountry Report: East Coast Powder

The past month has been fantastic in New England, as storm after storm after lake effect snow after up slope pow event has blanketed the region. Here in Vermont we have received more than 80 inches since the beginning of January, and it’s been cold nearly every day. For those scoring at home, that’s more than six feet. As I type this it’s snowing again, with a foot or more forecast for the Green Mountains between now and Tuesday. This should get us close to 100 inches in the space of more or less a month (!). A few days ago somebody commented that we almost have more snow than spots in Utah. Not sure if that’s […]

Lake Tahoe Storm Totals & Photo Tour | 26″ at Mt. Rose, NV

Mt. Rose ski resort in Nevada was the big winner from this storm and it’s no surprise. Forecasts were saying that below 8,000-feet, this storm was going to drop only rain. Luckily, the storm ended up colder than forecasted and we got some snow all the way down to lake level yesterday. Then, temperatures rose and we got rain on top of that snow at lake level and higher… Mt. Rose never say any rain with their above 8,000-foot base and they’re reveling in 26″ of new snow this morning and it’s still snowing. […]

Why Do So Many People Die Shoveling Snow?

When you think of dangerous winter activities, you probably wouldn’t consider shoveling snow to be on the list — but over 100 people die shoveling each year in the US. A study at the US Nationwide Children’s Hospital recorded 1,647 fatalities from cardiac-related injuries associated with shoveling snow from 1990 to 2006 . Cardiologist Barry Franklin, director of preventative cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation at William Beaumont Hospital, Michigan, lead a team of researchers to study the effects of shoveling. They found that when healthy young men shoveled snow, their heart rate and blood pressure increased more than when they […]
