Park City Ski Patrollers and Vail Resorts Finally Come to an ‘Agreement in Principle’

Following the collapse of the 50th round of negotiations, and an overwhelming agreement to strike if necessary, the Park City Professional Ski Patrollers Association (PCPSPA) and Vail Resorts appear to have finally come to an ‘agreement in principle’.

“We are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement in principle, and are appreciative of the engagement and commitment on both sides. The parties are finalizing the details and next steps which will include a vote by union members in the coming days. We appreciate the patience and support of everyone as we work on moving forward together.”

The public battle with Vail Resorts has seen over 50 rounds of unsuccessful negotiation, a GoFundMe raise over $100,000, and the threat of strike action from the patrollers.

On Monday Vail Resorts announced a $2 per hour bonus payout for employees who stay for the remainder of the season. It is not known how the bonus affects the PCPSPA and this agreement.

The PCPSPA has been meeting with representatives from Park City Mountain, UT, and Vail Resorts since August of 2020 to negotiate a new contract. The current contract covering 200 Ski Patrol and Mountain Safety personnel expired in November 2020. The Union hopes to secure a contract that will lead to a livable wage for career employees.

Since August of 2020, we have had over 40 bargaining sessions with the company, and we have stalled at a $15/hr starting wage for new patrollers.  Under this proposal, our patrollers approaching a decade of experience will make under $20/hr, and we will have 20-year patrollers receiving less than a 75 cent wage increase.  The company has stated that they lead the industry in employee benefits; however, our neighboring resorts in the Wasatch will reportedly start new patrollers at $17/hr this season. In the face of a dramatic rise in the local cost of living and inflation, we have found ourselves in a deeply challenging situation. To ensure employee retention and a safer resort experience for all, it is critical that this contract moves us toward a livable wage for career patrollers.

As ski and rescue professionals, safety on the mountain is the highest priority of any ski patroller. The PCPSPA believes that retaining highly skilled patrollers is one of the most important ways to maintain exceptional safety standards for both guests and employees. The longer a patroller has worked on the job, the more competent and skilled they become in emergency medical response, avalanche mitigation and rescue, risk evaluation, and terrain familiarity.

As an organization that is primarily concerned with safety and rescue, we feel that we cannot maintain the highest standards without retention of our most experienced and skilled members. That is why we are negotiating for living wages and fair compensation for the skills required of us in competition with other resorts. We want our patrollers to be able to build a career here.”

The PCPSPA wants a robust and stable contract that its members can feel confident in. However, with a rapidly evolving industry, the Union feels that it is necessary to keep avenues of conversation open with Vail Resorts regarding future wages.

“We understand that retention makes our jobs safer, and that translates into the safety of all guests as well. We have recently lost many experienced patrollers to better-paying jobs elsewhere as our wages have stagnated and lagged behind industry standards. We are eager to get a contract in place for the start of this season, but we believe it will be necessary to reopen wage discussions as early as next season to ensure continued fair compensation.”

Vail Resorts, who recently announced they have over $1.3 billion cash on hand and has increased sales of its Epic Pass by 47% over last year, is disappointed with the most recent outcome and responded with the following statement:

“Last Friday, Park City Mountain Ski Patrol union members rejected a contract proposal their bargaining team put to a vote which provided wage increases for all patrollers, incentive pay, increased wage caps, retroactive pay, an equipment allowance, additional investment into their tools and training, and access to future company bonuses including one for the 21-22 winter season.

As we do with all our employees, we listened, heard their concerns, and presented a competitive total compensation package that is very similar to the agreements ratified, near-unanimously, by our patrols at both Stevens Pass and Breckenridge. We are very disappointed with the outcome of this vote, especially given the months of discussions to get to this current proposal.

However, we remain committed to coming to a mutually-beneficial agreement with our patrol’s union at Park City and plan to return to the bargaining table as soon as possible. We are focused on supporting a safe and enjoyable ski and ride experience this season and sincerely hope our patrollers will choose to do the same.”

Breckenridge Ski Patrol union announced they had negotiated new terms with Vail Resorts in December. The terms were not made public.

  1. No one is forcing you to work as a ski patroller. Unionize and bargain for proper wages.

    If that doesn’t work go find another job that pays well. There’s 10.6 million job openings in America right now. Lots of opportunity to earn better pay.
