Swimmer Severely Injured by River Otter in Lake at Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA

Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA Rangers are advising people to avoid entering the water in Manzanita Lake due to the threat of attack from river otters. A visitor was severely injured by a river otter while swimming in the area on Thursday 25th June 2020.

River otter danger in Manzanita Lake. For your safety, do not enter the water or use soft-sided flotation devices in the area highlighted on the map. A visitor was severely injured by a river otter while swimming in this area on 6/25.

-River otters have sharp and powerful teeth and sharp claws.
-They are territorial and will protect their young with aggression.
-The river otter in this area is most likely a female protecting its young and den.

Please report any river otter incidents, especially aggressive behavior, to a park employee or at a visitor center.
