Two feet of fresh snow in 24-hours (13″ overnight) resulting in heightened avalanche activity meant that Snowbird, Utah, restricted its open terrain to just the Chickadee lift yesterday which serves the beginner area and a single green run.

In a social media update, the resort wrote:

“Teams have been working hard all morning to conduct avalanche mitigation and open terrain; however, due to ongoing natural avalanche activity, continued heavy snowfall and strong winds, Snowbird will not open any lifts other than Chickadee today, 12/3.”

Yesterday also saw a high of 29º with wind chill values as low as 8º, and winds 15 to 21 mph out of the west with gusts of up to 34 mph, contributing to the avalanche risk.

After a relatively dry start to the season and a postponed opening, Snowbird saw 41″ of fresh snow over the weekend and there is a further 18″ forecast during the week.

Snowbird signed off the update by saying that “safety of our guests and employees is always our #1 priority. We look forward to more powder turns with you, tomorrow.”
