VIDEO: 600-Inches of Snow in 10 Weeks in Japan

Deep snow japan

Last winter, I was lucky enough to escape the historic California drought and spend 10 weeks in Japan.  This was my 4th consecutive season in Japan and it was a record winter.  At times (like the beginning of this video), it was impossibly deep.  The consistency of the nightly refresh almost became comic. We got over 600-inches of snow in […]

19-FEET of Snow Forecast for Chile Next 4 Days!

Snow forecast for the Andes mountains of South America showing over 10-feet of snow in central Chile. Arrow and circle indicating central Chile where the ski resorts such as Valle Nevado, El Colorado, and Portillo are forecast to get huge amounts of snow.

Whoa. Valle Nevado ski resort in Chile’s upper mountain is forecast to receive 19-Feet of Snow (232 inches) in the next 4 days according to snow-forecast.com. 19-feet of snow? In 4 days? Are you kidding me? Maybe this El Nino thing really is going to happen this year in South America. Central Chile has been in a drought for the past 7 years. Maybe this will be the year that hugely aids that drought situation and makes the skiing all time. Maybe this will be the year that everyone has been waiting for. Maybe this will be the year that we will be talking about for decades to come. Maybe this is the year you should be coming down to South America…

VIDEO: Ridiculously Deep Snow at Rusutsu, Japan

Yuki is the Japanese word for snow. Any attempt to portray Rusutsu without mention of the Yuki that falls here would be a very incomplete illustration of Rusutsu, Hokkaido, or even Japan. The snow is why we go to Japan in the first place, thus in the snow is where our video journey to Rusutsu begins. This is why we dedicate the first episode solely to the incredibly deep and unbelievably […]

Norway Ski Resorts are BURIED in Snow Right Snow

May saw insanely abnormal snowfall in Norway this year. Meters upon meters of snow fell in May to the point where they couldn’t even find some of their ski lifts at Norweigen ski resorts. Summer glacier skiing ski resorts have been forced to remain closed due to too much snow. At Fonna ski resort in Norway, they had to dig 10-13 feet down just to locate their T-bar this week… Styrn ski resort in Norway is closed today due to heavy snowfall. More snow is forecasted for the area on Sunday. […]

The Top 5 Deepest Snowpacks on the West Coast:

Chris Benchetler ripping Mammoth pow on March 2nd, 2015. photo: mammoth

It’s been a challenging snowfall year on the West Coast but there have been some bright spots. Those bright spots are also the high spots. Mt. Bachelor, OR is the highest elevation ski resort in all of Washington and Oregon. Mt. Rose is the highest ski resort in Nevada (and Tahoe). Mammoth is the highest ski resort in California. These higher elevation ski resorts hang onto snow and get through warm spells better than their lower elevation counterparts. If you’re searching for snow this spring, search high. These snowpack numbers are taken from the ski resorts’ websites from their upper mountains on Thursday, […]

Top 10 Deepest Snowpacks in the USA:

The East Coast has the 2nd deepest snowpack in the USA right now? The East Coast owns 5 of the top 10 deepest snowpacks in the USA right now? The answer to both of these questions is YES. The East Coast is on fire right now. It’s a bizarre year, there’s no doubt about it. The Pacific Northwest usually dominates this list but right now there’s only one PNW ski resort on this list right now, Mt. Bachelor in Oregon. The Northern Rockies also make a strong showing taking 3 of the top 4 spots. Lets hope things stay snowy in the Rockies and East while the snow machine finally turns on […]

VIDEO: Ridiculously Deep Snow in Japan Yesterday

deep snow japan.

Two days ago, on February 10th, 2015, Japan had one of its deepest, driest days. It was certainly the deepest, driest day of the winter thus far. This video is from our first run. I don’t love using the GoPro-on-a-stick as it’s throws my balance off a bit, but I’m so stoked to have captured what that first run felt like to share with you. This is the kind of skiing we can all relate to. The kind of skiing we all dream about and hope for. Simple, deep, happy powder skiing. Gasping for air in between enormous faceshots, holding your breath, involuntarily licking snow off lips, wiping goggles, scanning for […]
