Mt. Baker Opening Day Conditions Report: Absolutely Bomber Coverage

Mt. Baker opening day 2015/16 was welcomed with open arms and lots of smiles, especially since it is the first resort in Washington to open! As Baker so cleverly put on the day tickets, “Baker Family Reunion” and was it ever. No new snow in the past 24 hours but with a base depth of 63″ at the top of Pan Dome, 34″ at Heather Meadows base […]

Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Genuine Powder

Athlete Marian Krogh skiing fresh snow in the Saddle Basin

The snow at Treble Cone has been off the charts lately. It’s snowed about 10cm every day for the last week but visibility remained poor until Saturday when the clouds parted and it was a glorious bluebird. The snow has been incredibly light and fluffy – genuine powder which is unusual for New Zealand. All terrain is open at Treble Cone including many areas that didn’t open at all last season. The best skiing on the mountain is […]

Mt. Baker Conditions Report: Rain, Rain Go Away

It’s been a wet one in the Cascades but Mt. Baker’s upper snow pack is holding on like a champ and if you got up high earlier in the week you could get some goods. Baker received 2″ of new snow overnight Saturday, 4″ in 24 hours and we’ll take it! With 32″ at Heather Meadows base and 52″ at the base of Pan Dome, Baker got nailed with the warm front and precipitation all week. The temp […]

Mt. Baker Conditions Report: Groomers Mid-week, Snow for the Weekend

Baker got the cat crew out this week for more grooming than usual which provided some fun for those mid-week skiers and riders who wanted to work on their carving skills. White Salmon base area was closed (will be open this weekend) and chairs 1 – 5 were spinning all week with discounted $47 tickets. Chair 5 seemed to be the best option for a top to bottom rip. Operating from […]

Mt Baker Conditions Report: Start Dancing!

Well it’s been a rough start to the season in Washington but blue bird days at the hill prove to always be better than a day in an office. Despite sun, warm temps and rain, Baker is still holding their snowpack with 40″ at Heather Meadows base and 61″ at the base of Pan Dome. Mother Nature is being selfish for us but mid-week we saw sunny, springtime conditions that can sometimes be welcomed […]

Mt. Baker Conditions Report

Winter has officially arrived in the PNW and Mt. Baker now has the deepest snowpack in Washington! It snowed most of this holiday week (December 22 – 28, 2014), covering and filling in much of what was left and we even had a few deep powder days, typical Baker style. Baker is now able to run all eight lifts and about 95% of trails are open. Ski patrol managed to get Canyons open Sunday afternoon with some hooting and hollering from those who found the goods. With 5″ of new snow in the past 12 hours and 16″ of new snow in the last 24 hours, there are going to be some happy skiers and riders. Friday and Saturday […]

Mt. Baker Opening Day (finally!) Conditions Report

Mt. Baker is open and there were lots of smiles, snow and shredding to be had yesterday for opening day! It was a little crowded but what opening day isn’t? Especially when Washington has had to wait so long to get the goods. Baker had 7″ of new snow yesterday, 14″ in the last 48 hours and 23″ storm total of new since Thursday. The Heather Meadows base total is now 30″ and Pan […]

Squaw Valley Weekend Report: Great Skiing Returns to Tahoe

First of all, I want to send a big Thank You out to the Squaw Valley Sk Patrol. They made this weekend awesome by opening up tons of terrain and giving skiers and riders exactly what they want. They gave us Mainline Pocket, Reverse Traverse (Headwall Face), the Funnel, Solitude, and Granite Chief making this weekend the best skiing I’ve had at Squaw since 2011. On Friday, Squaw opened up with 16″ of new snow. They had Gold Coast, Big Blue, Solitude, and Shirley Lake open […]

Tierra del Fuego Conditions Report: Powder Day at the End of the World Yesterday

Hanging glacier viewed from the top.

Tierra del Fuego is the southernmost provence of Argentina. There is only once civilized location here: Ushuaia. This is where boats to and from Antarctica and beyond moor for resupply and passenger exchange. I just returned to Ushuaia on Monday after an incredible, once in a lifetime trip to ski Antarctica with Ice Axe Expeditions. Yesterday, I got a chance to ski here in the Tierra […]

Dumping Snow in Patagonia Today | Photo Tour:

Nubes chair at Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina today. photo: snowbrains.com

It snowed like crazy today at Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina for the third time since Tuesday. Snowing inches per hour for the third time since Tuesday. I couldn’t help but laugh and smile today as I rode the Nubes chair. It was a Saturday on the last weekend of the season, it was nuking snow, it was a powder day, and no one was out. The last Saturday of year is generally reserved for slushy skiing, sunburns, talking to girls, and seeing if you can have one drink at each refugio on the mountain (good luck, there’s 12…). This season, spring was completely hijacked by heavy snows. […]

Squaw-Alpine Traverse Conditions Update // Photo Tour

Starting out on the hike over to Alpine, with gloomy weather overhead

With the merging of Squaw and Alpine we are all chomping at the bit to get our hands on White Wolf, but in the mean time the Squaw-Alpine traverse will serve just fine.  The connect was made official this year and serves as a fun twist on the two mountains we all know and love.  Patrol has kept the gate […]

Squaw Conditions Report: KT’s Last Weekend | Photo Tour

The high road on mountain run is closed for the year...and for good reason: it's all dirt

It’s that time of year when Squaw’s impressive fleet of chairs begins to diminish at a rapid pace, with the lower mountain lifts dropping like flies.  While the skiing is still holding up decently well, the rate of snow loss is rather alarming.  Red Dog and Squaw Creek are done for the year, and KT will be soon to follow.  […]

Squaw Conditions Report, March 30th: Monsoon Season Approaches | Photo Tour

Jehren Boehm skinny ski

With Easter Weekend upon us and the different Grom programs of the Valley coming to a close, not to mention the Pain McShlonky Classic going off, the atmosphere around Squaw Valley was simply spring time fun.  And, the skiing is still ripping, with the Corn Farming in high season.  That’s right ladies and gents, if you’ve been sleeping in you […]
