The western regions of North America, including Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California, are expected to experience warmer-than-normal conditions. A positive Pacific North American Oscillation pattern is predicted, leading to above-normal temperatures in the Northwest. On the other hand, the eastern two-thirds of the United States, from the Plains eastward, are expected to have cooler conditions, influenced by the El Nino year. This cooler air mass set up in the east is encouraged by the warmer air mass setup in the west. In terms of precipitation, below-normal precipitation is forecasted for the Northwest and Northern Plains, in line with a traditional El Nino pattern. Overall, the precipitation forecast has seen fewer changes compared to the temperature forecast.

The Northwest is expected to experience very dry conditions, while the Southwest can expect above-average precipitation and cold conditions. The Rockies and Cascades will still see typical snowfall, but nothing out of the ordinary. The forecaster also mentions the possibility of a polar vortex event and frequent Arctic blasts, as well as a winter battle zone where rain, snow, and ice can all be expected.

Possibility of significant snowstorms in the interior Eastern United States for the upcoming winter season. There has been a slight westward shift in the forecasted worst of winter area, but still expect big snowstorms along the Eastern Seaboard. Based on recent years’ patterns and the presence of El Niño, which typically brings coastal storms and cold blasts, there is a higher likelihood of heavy snowfall this year.
