Portillo, Chile Conditions Report & Photo Tour:

I skied Portillo from July 26 to August 1. Sorry for the late posting, but the moral of the story remains the same: book your flight to Santiago. Although this isn’t the best season for snow at Portillo, with parts of Chile in a drought, the conditions were awesome. The hotel is world class, as are the staff and ski instructors, who I believe are some of the best ski instructors from all over the world, gathered in one place. Maybe it’s all the orange signs in front of Andarivel Roca […]

Awesome Skiing Potential in Kazakhstan | Trip Report & Photo Tour:

My journey began at the Vancouver International Airport. At the bar next to Harrison, a frontiersman from up north. He was on his way to Costa Rica for his annual blowout – which was much deserved. The guy had been laying ground connecting parts of northern BC into the grid for the better part of 9 months. We were having a chat with the barista-bartender who was getting me a shipload of hops and the most basic $26 burger I have yet to have the displeasure of paying for. He set down my second pint and asked; “Where are you off to […]

Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Rain, Lightning, Sketchy Pow, & Korean Food

It rained since we arrived in Wanaka on Tuesday and we patiently waited for the wind and lightning to stop by eating at the local Korean restaurant and fishing in the nearby rivers and making a day trip to Queenstown about an 1 hour west. Finally, the weather turned and Treble Cone reopened on Sunday and a huge crowd showed up. Only the lower mountain was open in the morning, as they were de-icing and prepping the Saddle Basin chair and terrain. There are so many obstacles and the coverage is so thin that we saw 2 ski patroller sleds come down with injured people BEFORE 10 am […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: La Laguna is Ready

With the upper mountain open there is plenty of riding to be found and you can access runs from the Top at Nubes chair down to Princesa 1 chair. The pistes have good snow coverage however in places there are icy patches so be aware although this softens up throughout the day! For the more adventurous of you La Laguna is a short hike and some great snow can be found at the top with riding down to the bottom of Del Bosque chair which was open today for the first time in two weeks. But the really great news is Bariloche is braced to receive a big dump of snow this […]

Las Lenas, Argentina Conditions Report: Torrecillas, La Oficina, Entre Rios, Cerro Martin

Las Lenas ski resort in Argentina just had a pretty darned good powder day last week. It still appears that the inbounds stuff is thin and sketchy, but it’s obvious from this report that the backcountry is skiing well. The terrain is so big in Las Lenas, that you just need a bit of powder to make for an unreal experience. “I skied las lenas the last week and the snow condition were incredible! […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: 3-Foot Base Up Top

Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina is starting to build up enough snowpack to make things interesting. Actually, from these photos, the upper mountain is looking damn good. One of our reporters there, local ripper Julian, just sent us these photos and this report. He’s reporting that there is over a 3 foot base at the top and that you can ski to the bottom. Many years, you can never ski all the way to the bottom. Sounds like […]

Australia Conditions Report | Mt. Hotham Backcountry: Razorback

Things in Australia have been looking pretty good lately, after a bit of a late start, the mountains have been seeing some decent falls of snow. The forecast for last weekend was looking good, a little bit of fresh snow and then sunshine. Rob and Myself got in the car late Friday afternoon and begun the six and a half hour mission up to the mountains. Saturday was a great day in the resort of Mt Hotham, little bit of fresh snow overnight kept everyone happy and stoked. The ski area […]

Mt. Shasta Conditions Report: Warm Days, Good Climbing on CA’s Largest Glaciers

July brings classic summer weather to Mt. Shasta; days are warm and winds mild with relief from the heat found on the upper mountain and glaciers. We wrapped up the south side season and are no longer leading trips on Avalanche Gulch or the West Face. After the drought winter of 2014, we were pleasantly surprised to have really good climbing on the mountain. […]

RALS WHITE | 13/14 Northstar

Rals White showing us to play the cards you were dealt with, especially when that comes to Tahoe’s previous season which was not par. Honestly, the worst year ever. Lucky for the YDKS kids that Northstar has one of the best snow making systems in California keeping them up and off the dirt, for most of winter. […]

Mt. Hood, OR Conditions Report: July 5th & 6th Summer Skiing

What did you do over the 4th of July weekend? Whatever patriotic activity you participated in, you could have gone to Mt Hood instead. You can ski and ride the Palmer glacier, or even climb the 11,240 foot (3426 m) peak in the Oregon Cascades all summer long. The weather was just perfect: sunny, mostly clear and not too warm. The snow stayed in decent shape until about noon before it turned too soft for the ski racers that make up the majority of the people on the mountain. […]

Mt. Moran, Wyoming Conditions Report: Summer Solstice Party Ski

12,605-foot Moran is a classic mountain, and skiing the skillet is mega classic, so in order to make it obscure, we decided to have a summer solstice party and also ski during a snowstorm. The rest of the trip was clear and sunny, but we nailed the timing and became engulfed in a cloudy, white-out snowstorm just as we were arriving at the summit. And, right as we finished the ski, it got sunny again. That was obscure I think. I bet most people don’t try to do that. “I was surprised that the edit showed so many close ups of my face.” Said Silas, the star of the edit. […]

A Opinionated Canadian Perspective of Beartooth Basin, MT/WY…

A lot of ski trips start by reading magazines or internet articles about sweet places to ski. This was no different. After having read a Powder Magazine article last spring on this place and a Snowbrains.com article this spring, I decided it must get done. These type of ski hills are disappearing – they don’t fit the corporate model and the snow is […]

Trip Report: Mt. Washington, NH & Tuckerman Ravine

An excellent weather window for the Presidential Range meant it was time to not only check Mt. Washington off my summit list, but most importantly recon some ski terrain in and around Tuckerman Ravine. Matt and I got an early start from Vermont and arrived at Hermit Lake by 9am where we would camp for the evening. Walking out the next morning validated our decision to go on a Friday when the crowds would be lighter […]
