August 1998, deep in the northern Pakistani controlled sector of Kashmir, Ned Gillette and his wife Olympic skier Suzy Patterson set out with the hopes of accomplishing the โ€œtrek along the flanks of Nanga Parbat (at 25,660 feet, the worldโ€™s 10th-highest mountain) and then making their way across a 16,000-foot pass at the edge of the Chogo Lungma.โ€ An ambitious journey to say the least, however Gillette and his wife Patterson were accustomed to such adventures in their time, skiing, sailing, and climbing all over the globe. yeti, nepal, footprints, nepal

When thinking of the Himalayas, Everest and mountain climbing often come to mind for most, and for a few, images of the Yeti or Abominable Snowman are conjured up. Big Mountains, Decent Snow and Skiing in July | Portillo, Chile Trip Report

Skiing in the Southern Hemisphere is an experience. There is something about skiing fresh snow in July that doesnโ€™t compute in your headโ€ฆits supposed to be sunny, Iโ€™m supposed to be at the beach or something, but rather Iโ€™m skiing 5โ€ณ of fresh snow in late July in Chileโ€ฆweird. Once you get over the mind block that says this isnโ€™t right, its nothing but good, muy bueno. If you want to ski in the Southern Hemisphere during the North American summer you have two [โ€ฆ]

Portillo, Chile Conditions Report: Chalky, Variable & a Whole lot of Fun

Despite a severe lack of snow, and a opening date that kept being pushed back, Portillo is skiing great right now. Two weeks ago Portillo saw almost 6.5 feet, allowing the resort to open for the first time all season. Since then snow has been scarce, but what is left is holding up well. The groomers are fast, and certain [โ€ฆ]

El Colorado, Chile Conditions Report: Fast, Rocky and Firm

Two weeks ago El Colorado and most of Central Chile received their first significant snowfall of the season, finally allowing the resorts to open after a long wait. Nearly two weeks later though without snow and El Colorado and neighboring Valle Nevada and La Parva are in dire need of snow once more. Over the weekend El Colorado was fast and icy, half the time it was a slide for life rather than actually making turns. None the less, skiing [โ€ฆ]

The Man on the White Horse who Saved the Sierra Nevada

โ€œIf youโ€™ve seen one Redwood, youโ€™ve seen them allโ€ฆโ€ that is not the kind of thing you would expect to hear from someone who single handedly โ€œsaved the Sierra.โ€ But said gentleman did in fact utter such a phrase whilst residing in the White House. Years prior however, while governor of California, said gentleman, Ronald Reagan rode out into the Sierra Nevada Mountains on a white horse and made a decision that would forever impact the Sierra Nevada [โ€ฆ]

Squaw Conditions Report: Spring Marches On

As spring drags on (month 3 I think) the skiing at Squaw continues to be good despite the high temperatures and severe lack of snow. Friday at Squaw offered firm and fast groomers in the morning, and soft corn and mank in the afternoon. The high temperatures this weekend will make getting out early the call, corduroy in the morning, corn in the afternoon, and beers before 4. [โ€ฆ]

Sugar Bowl Conditions Report: Fun in the Sun

Despite a lackluster winter in Tahoe, the skiing is still pretty darn good. The 2 foot storm that hit the area last weekend left some good snow up high, unfortunately after a week of sun, and warm temperatures, a good portion of that has disappeared. None the less, the skiing is still ripping at Sugar Bowl, with firm ripable groomers in the morning, and afternoon corn abound. Sugar Bowl is skiing great right now, with cool temperatures in the morning the groomers are the call, while off-piste is a bit crunchy. By mid-afternoon the snow began to soften up making off trail an option, and corn filled groomers arenโ€™t [โ€ฆ]

Squaw Conditions Report: Soft Wintry Snow & Sun

After a weekend of high snow levels and a lot of rain, the last push from the storm that hit Tahoe came in a little bit colder, and ended with a decent amount of snow. Squaw reported a storm total of 2โ€ฒ, now while the jury is still out on whether that is true, one thing is for sure, the skiing at Squaw is killer right now. Monday saw the last push of the storm, and some cloudy skies with a bit of snow, Tuesday and Wednesday however went blue, and people got after it. From the Pocket to the Palisades, Tahoe skiers enjoyed wintery snow once again, and everyone was commenting on how the last three days have been the best all [โ€ฆ]

Christmas Week in Tahoe, the Best it Could Be| Squaw & Bronco

The Holidays always prove to be a busy season in Tahoe, no matter good snow or bad. This year was no exception, while the snowfall was less than desirable, the skiing was actually really good. During the holiday week, most passes at Squaw & Alpine are blacked out, but for those select few (Gold, Studentโ€ฆ) the skiing is some of the best it will be all season. And this season was no exception, while lack of snow put a damper on the skiing, the skiing was still ripping at Squaw, and the backcountry offered even better options. Eric and Jesse got after it during their winter break, and made the best of the dismal snow pack, large holiday [โ€ฆ]
