SnowBrains Antarctica Highlight Video 2022

In 2022, we went to Antarctica to ski guide with Ice Axe Expeditions twice. Twice! 2 trips of a lifetime in a 4-week window… (Wanna come with us to Antarctica in 2023?  Shoot us an email at contact@snowbrains.com) The weather was insane on both trips. Much higher than average snowpack and snowfall last year. We took full advantage and experienced […]

Antarctica 2022 Report Day #5: Big Wind, Rowdy Zodiac Rides, & Wind Blown Powder

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SnowBrains (@snowbrains) Report from November 11, 2022 On our fifth ski day in Antarctica, we had ripping winds and cloudy skies. From the boat, we could see a gully with wind-blown snow in it that looked soft and fun. We climbed up near the ridgeline, transitioned, and skied down into that […]

Antarctica Report Day #4: Skiing Through Seracs, Skiing to a Shipwreck, & a BBQ on the Back Deck

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SnowBrains (@snowbrains) Report from November 10, 2022 This day started with a spectacular descent through seracs and crevasses on the west side of Nansen Island. The light was flat but the skiing was good. The old powder skied well and got a little funky and catchy toward the bottom. We headed […]

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SnowBrains (@snowbrains) Report from November 9, 2022 Nope, a full-on powder day in Antarctica is not a normal thing… But, that’s precisely what happened on November 9, 2022. My group was the last Zodiac off the ship. There was powder everywhere… As the groups in front of us toiled up the […]

Antarctica 2022 Report Day #2: Full-On Storm Day Powder Skiing & Penguin Take Over

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SnowBrains (@snowbrains) Report from November 8, 2022 Day 2 of our Antarctica ski trip with Ice Axe Expeditions 2022 brought us directly into a snowstorm. It really doesn’t snow much in Antarctica. Antarctica is the highest, driest, coldest, windiest continent. That said, the peninsula where we ski is a little different. […]

Is Climate Change Turning Antarctica’s Snow Green?

green snow

Antarctica has large patches of green snow that are visible from space using satellite imaging. This green snow is caused by algal blooms. The patches of green snow have been growing as the continent warms due to climate change. Scientists mapped the prevalence of the blooms along the Antarctic peninsula and published their findings in late May. Most think of […]

**All photos in this article are from Ice Axe Expeditions’ 2017 Antarctica trip. In November 2018, November 2017, November 2016, and November 2014, I was fortunate enough to guide 4 fun skiers in Antarctica for a week with Ice Axe Expeditions aboard the 331-foot Sea Adventurer.  These were by far the coolest trips I’ve ever been on anywhere.  Not just the coolest […]

Trip Report: Skiing Antarctica With Ice Axe Expeditions 2017

**All photos in this article are from Ice Axe Expeditions’ 2017 Antarctica trip. Powder & Sunshine.  Powder & Sunshine are what defined the October/November 2017 Ice Axe Expeditions Antarctica ski trip.  Crisp, dry powder skiing isn’t even thought to happen in Antarctica, we know.  But in late October 2017, we skied boot deep, dreamy powder on the Antarctic Peninsula. The […]

Trip Report: Skiing the Antarctic Peninsula w/ Ice Axe Expeditions

ski antarctica

On November 9th, 2014, I set ski boot on the continent of Antarctica for the first time in my life. Within 5 minutes of being on land, a monstrous (about the size of 3 houses) iceberg began to moan, crack, and then flip over less than 100 yards away from where we stood. Within 6 minutes of being in Antarctica, I found myself running uphill, away from the ocean to avoid a potentially huge wave that the flipping iceberg threatened to send our way. Welcome to Antarctica rookie… 93 skiing clients and 24 mountain guides set sail in the 331-foot Sea Adventurer from Ushuaia, Argentina (furthest south city on Earth) for the Antarctic Peninsula […]
