VIDEO: 10-Seconds of Faceshots in Japan & Faceshots Poem

Faceshots. Faceshots are reason why we ski and ride. Faceshots are why we donโ€™t sleep well the night before a big powder day. Faceshots are we wait tables, bartend, ski instruct, lift operate, drive groomers, pour coffees, and avoid the real world. Faceshots are why we are here. A lot is given up for the pleasures of faceshots and itโ€™s most certainly worth it. Faceshots feel like theyโ€™re becoming ever more elusive. We have to wait longer, travel further, climb higher for faceshots these days it [โ€ฆ]

One Week in Japan | Photo Tour:

The "Adventure Zone", Japan. photo: snowbrains

These four photos represent last week in Japan. Itโ€™s been snowing like crazy with more snow on the ground before New Years Day 2015 than we had here all of last season. We had three weeks of horribly deep snow and then it rained and got coldโ€ฆ Damn. But it was insane while it lasted and itโ€™ll come around soon. The forecast for the next week is surprisingly dry for Japan in January. Hopefully theyโ€™re wrong and we get right back into what you see here. [โ€ฆ]

VIDEO: 42-Seconds of Horribly Deep Snow in Japan Today

I arrived in Japan two days ago. Itโ€™s been nuking snow, as per usual. Actually, itโ€™s been a bit unusual. Japan just had a wild December with more snow than theyโ€™ve had in that month for over 10 years. There is more snow on the ground than there ever was at any point last season. The high snow levels of snow are translating to big pillows, groovy spines, buried bushes, and better skiing. It takes a lot of snow to tame the jungles of Japan. This video is from today โ€“ the last day of 2014 โ€“ December 31st, 2014 โ€“ New Years Eve 2014. Itโ€™s been snowing [โ€ฆ]

Some areas are forecasts to receive up to 60 inches of snow by Friday morning. Snowfall rates of 3-inches per hour have been observedโ€ฆ โ€œThe coldest air of the season so far will continue to trigger bands of very heavy snow downwind of the Great Lakes into the middle of the week and beyond. The snow will be blinding in some areas, falling at the rate of 3-5 inches per hour, and can be accompanied by gusty winds, thunder and lightning. Travel will be impossible for a time [โ€ฆ]

Deep Snow โ€“ Mt. Lassen, California | June 1st, 1995โ€ฆ

โ€œCheck out our group of smelly hippy three pinners: 1995 Mt Lassen.โ€ โ€“ Dan (one of the guys in the photos) This photo was taken on June 1st, 1995 at Mt. Lassen, California. Mt. Lassen is a stratovolcano in Northern California that is known for its copious winter snowfall. 1995 was simply insane at Mt. Lassen. โ€œCanโ€™t believe that little plow scrapped away that drift just so we could ski in June.โ€ โ€“ Dan (one of the guys in the photos) 1995 was an interesting year on Earth. โ€™95 was a La Nina year (legendary for big snowfall winters) and was the 6th warmest year on record on Earth (and the #1 warmest ever at the time). Mt. Lassen, CA by the Numbers: 10,463โ€ฒ [โ€ฆ]

When the snow is deep, we need to be very aware of the deadly dangers of tree wells. This tree well death in Whistler is the 4th tree well death that we know of in North America this winter. Please be careful out there, ski with a buddy, and stay away from tree wells. [โ€ฆ]

Hakuba, Japan Conditions Report: 3 Feet of Fresh Snow Today

avy fence skiing

Happo-One ski resort in Hakuba, Japan got around 3 feet of new snow last night which made today another damn fine powder day. The day started off grey with some light snow floating down before clearing up some and getting very windy. At opening bell, there wasnโ€™t much groomed resulting in skiers and riders wallowing up to their necks in snow all over the piste. Many people were absolutely stuck in the snow the first run of the day. We started off the day on the upper mountain playing with the avy fences before moving onto some open faces and eventually into the [โ€ฆ]

Freeskier magazine just ranked the top 5 ski resorts on a powder day. We must say that we mostly agree with this list. For us, the top 5 zones for freeskiing in North America are Tahoe, Utah, Jackson, & Whistler. Interior B.C. should get a mention here, though. We would replace Heavenly with Revelstokeโ€ฆ [โ€ฆ]

Sugar Bowl Today = Stupid Deep Photo Tour:

powder skiing

Today was Sugar Bowl ski resort in Californiaโ€™s opening day for the 2013/14 season. They got 18-22โ€ณ of snow overnight and they stuff was dry and very light. The 18-22 inches of new snow fell at a temperature of 15ยบF and was exhibiting a density of about 5%. It was blower snow, champagne powder, light as lint, insert dry snow clichรฉ here. Face shots abounded at Sugar Bowl today. Sugar Bowl was likely the only ski resort in Lake Tahoe that actually had a natural base of snow covering its mountain slopes. That previously existing base gave the 22 new inches of snow something to sit on top [โ€ฆ]
