Squaw Valley, CA Report: Simply Surreal Bluebird Powder Day

Report from March 28th, 2019 Squaw Valley, CA was simple surreal yesterday. Cotton candy sunrise, perfect huck snow, the entire mountain looking virginal, eloquent sunshine, 203% of average snowpack, good friends, cool temperatures, and light crowds. We started our day in The Fingers and they were as good as they get. Stable snow that wouldn’t move had slathered them and made […]

Its Snowing! Last Season’s Shred Stoke @ Squawalpine

2017/18 was definitely a weird season for Squaw Valley & Alpine Meadows but by being creative, snow enthusiasts can have a wicked time on the hill. The season started slowly with ‘just enough’ coverage around the mountain. That made perfect opportunities to ski with the kids and get their technique in order. It wasn’t until March when the typical heavy Sierra snowfalls blanketed the region.

Sunny Sessions between Super Storms @ Squaw

During the month of January 2017, over 23 feet of snow fell around the Tahoe region. After the first 10 feet, a few days of reprieve occurred over the MLK holiday. This gave time for the resorts to dig out and open more terrain…just in time for an old kid like myself to have some fun.

I’m creating this blog to give some reference on how much snow has fallen SINCE this report…the result is pure craziness for the end of January when compared to the last few years.

The Top 3 Longest Ski Seasons in Lake Tahoe:

It’s not often these days that you get to ski in the month of May in Lake Tahoe. The last few years, especially once the winter storms abate, have shown thin snow packs come spring. But after an epic season last year, folks had the pleasure of skiing and riding at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Resort through May 30th. That’s […]

Killing Some Time on KT-22 @ Squaw

Just over a week ago, I was fortunate to be greeted by a foot of new, no wind, bluebird skies and one chairlift that has some of the best skiing in North America…

After dropping off the two kids at Ski School, Dad in full sweaty-powday-freak-out mode, was stressed about missing those crucial first pow runs. Luckily, a delayed opening for the mountain gave me some time to relax…at the end of the KT line. Once the mountain opened, conditions were sublime all over KT-22, including The Nose, The Alternates, The Fingers, and of course, under Olympic Lady. For quality control, I stayed on the North Facing aspects to maximize my half day sans kids.

Squaw Valley Report – The Mothership Has Landed!

Squaw Valley’s iconic KT-22 chair opened for the season yesterday and boy was it good. The lift was scheduled to pop at 1pm, but patrol and the ops team managed to have it ready for an early start and we were riding the chair shortly after 11:30am. My heart goes out to the few people who booked 1pm private lessons […]

VIDEO: Skiing NAKED 1,000-Feet Down Chute 75 @ Squaw Valley on June 5th

After spending a day hiking up Squaw Valleys infamous Shirley Canyon, we had reached High Camp and decided to continue the hike down the Mountain Run (more so due to the Cable Car being closed). Upon wandering down, a quick glimpse of what could be a ski-able Chute 75 quickly turned into an anxious emotion turned-up inside of me, ready to shred KT. The thought that you could ski top to bottom in Chute 75 [over 1,000-vertical feet] was crazy following the season […]

KT-22 @ Squaw Is Closed for the Season | Conditions Report:

Squaw Valley’s legendary KT-22 charilift closed for the season yesterday. Losing KT is always a hard hit and is especially so this year as the best skiing on the mountain was on KT yesterday. KT is the one place at Squaw where you can bang out laps while getting in a ton of vertical on great terrain. KT, you will be missed. Our operations teams are putting in extra effort to keep as much terrain […]

Squaw Valley to Open KT-22 & Headwall Chairs on Saturday

68″ of new snow at Squaw Valley last week changed everything. The upper mountain looks like mid-winter on a good year, ie things are filled in and ready to roll. Squaw will open Granite Chief today for the first time all season before opening KT-22 and Headwall for the first time all season on Saturday. […]

KT-22 & Lower Mountain Closed for Season @ Squaw

KT-22, “The Mothership,” has been closed for the season.  The lower mountain is closed for the season as well.  The base of the mountain is almost completely melted out at this point.  It’s time to move upstairs.  Squaw will be closed completely by sunday, so come and say goodbye. The good news is that the Funitel is still open […]

Your Last Chance to Ride KT-22 @ Squaw = This Weekend

Squaw Valley’s legendary KT-22’s snow is burning off fast.  It’s 56F at the bottom of Squaw right now and you can hear the creeks flowing.  The rain comin’ it ain’t gonna help… We think patrol is having a hard time figuring out how they’ll keep KT open thru the weekend. Our best sources are telling us that KT-22 and likely […]

Squaw Update: Upper Mt. Only by Next Week, Squaw will likely Close April 22nd

Red Dog closed for the season today.  KT-22 and Headwall will most likely follow suit next monday. The entire lower mountain will likely be closed next week and there is a good chance Squaw will completely close on April 22nd. Large dirt patches are all over the Mountain Run and it’s getting less and less realistic to keep things […]

Skinny Ski-A-Thon on KT-22 @ Squaw Valley | April Fools Day 2013

The idea of the Skinny Ski-A-Thon is simple:  get people to pledge $$/lap and ski as many laps as you can on skinny skis (70mm or less) down the KT-22 at Squaw Valley, USA.   Last year, Squaw Valley’s Greg Lindsey won the Skinny Ski-A-Thon with 46 laps on KT-22.  I think there was some powder around last year possibly […]
