Surfing Oregon – Why, When, Where? A cold, wild coast that can regularly generate numbers like 24-foot swells at 8-second intervals with 100mph wind gusts and a sea temperature of 46 degrees, Oregon is neither for the faint of heart nor the physically frail. But it does have some damn good surfing, and for all levels despite its notoriety. Pronounced “organ,” by locals, the coastal state […] Surf Martin Kuprianowicz | May 29, 2024 0 Comments
Video Shows Newly Re-Opened San Diego, CA Beach Extremely Packed with Surfers At Sunrise on Monday, April 27, San Diego County reopened many of its beaches to the general public, but things got weird quickly. The county discontinued restrictions for beach-goers and surfers while keeping the restrictions for motorized boating in place. But, in less than an hour after one San Diego beach re-opened it was already packed with hundreds of […] Surf SnowBrains | April 28, 2020 0 Comments
How To Avoid A Shark Attack When Surfing Let’s face it — sharks are scary animals. Sure, they are often misunderstood and get a bad rap since they are incredibly vital to the ecosystem and oceanic food chain and may not mean to attack surfers in particular. Sometimes we just look like food, dressed in our wet suits on our boards appearing as sea lions. But regardless, that […] Surf Martin Kuprianowicz | September 2, 2019 2 Comments

VIDEO: Next Level Surfing @ 1,000 Frames per Second You really just have to watch this video to appreciate it. Surfing happens so fast. The rides are so short. The airs are so quick. Slowing things down to this degree allows us to witness and appreciate what actually occurs during those rapid but intense moments that continue to define and push this incredible sport. Airs? Airs are the future. Guys are just starting to land some insane tricks. Kelly Slater just stomped a 540 last week. A guy named Leif has footage of a rodeo flip. Kelly Slater recently stated he’s working on a 720º invert. Things are about […] Surf SwellBrains | October 28, 2014 3 Comments
Detailed 2013/14 Ocean Beach, California Season Recap: The below chart is from Wunderground. They have a weather station somewhere near Kelly’s and it records all kinds of meteorological data continuously, including wind direction and speed. You can see the average daily wind direction and speed for August 1, 2013 through April 31, 2014. Remember all those good days we had in December and January? Well, they can pretty much be explained by the average wind direction being E on those days. 9-15 Feet of Swell Leads to 9-15 Feet of Snow | Whistler 2013/14 The latest in Under the Weather skiing series brings more face shots than you can shake a stick at, deeper powder than you could swim thorough, and higher flying than should be humanly possible. But it wasn’t always in the cards… This winter was looking bad. Really, really bad. But like most […] SnowBrains | April 27, 2014 1 Comment
Julia Mancuso Surfs Sochi After Winning Bronze Medal Squaw Valley’s Julia Mancuso, the most decorated female Winter Olympian in history, went surfing in Sochi, Russia last week. Julia is a surfer, has a house in Maui, and got invited to surf with Sal Masakela on her last day in Sochi, Russia’s Black Sea. Cool. “It was cold, but it wasn’t bad. I didn’t have a hoodie [an insulated neoprene hood] on, so I only lasted about 45 minutes. I caught four amazing waves. There were some big sets. Most of the waves were shoulder high. I caught some incredible waves all the way to the shore, so I was pretty stoked. We surfed up a storm, literally. There was a storm passing through and it died out in two hours, and the waves were gone after that. We hit it perfect.” – People Magazine […] SwellBrains | February 25, 2014 0 Comments
Swell Saturdays: This Kid is Only 11-Years-Old & He Absolutely Rips It’s not fair that this kid is only 11-years-old. Most surfers will never be this good nor surf waves this crisp. This kid is 11 and he’s crushing everything thrown at him. He moves like the guys on the World Tour move. He can cut back, hit floaters, tube-ride, stall, air, everything and he’s only 11-years-old. His name is Alan Jr Cleland. You might want to remember that name. We have a sneaking suspicion that we’ll be seeing and hearing […] Surf SnowBrains | December 7, 2013 0 Comments
Swell Saturdays: Worst Wipe-Outs of 2012 Wipe out. It’s a highly subjective term. You wipe out on a 3-foot wave and it’s funny. You wipe out on a 30-foot wave and it could be deadly. The wipe outs in this video are generally of the latter. Some of these wipe outs aren’t too unlike ski and snowboard wipe outs. Tomahawks, face-plants, boards hitting you as you fall, 10-foot falls, […] Surf SwellBrains | November 2, 2013 2 Comments
