Report from November 27, 2023

Yesterday, I dropped into Suicide Chute (Country Lane) on 11,068′ Mt. Superior, UT for the 3rd time in 6 days.

This was ski day #295 for my “300” project.

I have until December 8, 2023, to get to 300…

Suicide Chute was pure moguls yesterday 😀

11,068′ Mt. Superior, UT – “Suicide Chute”

  • Car:  8,400′
  • Vertical From Car:  1,500′
  • Vertical skied:  ???′
  • Max Pitch:  45º
  • Avg Pitch: 40º
  • Aspect:  East
  • Distance:  1.5-miles round trip
  • Time From Car to Top:  1 hour & 13 minutes
  • Car to Car Time: 2 hours & 12 minutes
  • Recommended Equipment:  Crampons, Ice Axe

I want to keep the skiing in project meaningful so in place of skiing the mellow groomers and white ribbons currently available at Utah ski resorts, I’m opting to hike as ski Suicide Chute and other backcountry lines as much as possible to close out this project with style.

I started hiking about 12:30pm.

Hiking up the apron was warm and sweating and took about 30 minutes.

I switched to crampons and the boot pack in the chute was bomber.

I was on top in 1 hour and 13 minutes.

I hung out on top for a while then dropped in.

The skiing was damn fun.

A mix of moguls, chalk, and chewed-up powder.

The chute skied well right to the bottom where the rocks start poking out.

I sideslipped my way to the base of the chute then put the skis on the pack and walked down the sketchy lowest section of the couloir.

From there I put the skis back on and awkwardly feathered my way down the skin track hitting many a rock as I went.

At some point, the rock strikes became too frequent and I switched back to walking.

My plan right now is at least 2 more Suicide Chutes before hitting 300.

If all goes well, I should be able to get to 305 before my cut-off of December 8.

After Superior, I slunk into SLC and watched our Editor-in-Chief, Martin, give a strong talk about social media in the bakcountry at Wasatch Touring.

Thanks, Utah!
