Report from September 6th, 2018 Yesterday was a powder day at Cerro Catedral in Bariloche, Argentina. About a foot of new snow had fallen the previous night. The new snow came with big wind, so wind exposed spots were blown down to an ice layer but wind protected spots were double deep and dreamy. The day started with big wind […]

Bariloche, Argentina Backcountry Report: Amazing Views & A Chute That Barely Goes

After yesterday’s inbounds powder day, I decided to go into the lift accessed backcountry via Cerro Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina today. The morning was clear, cold, windless. I reached the top of the couloir I was to ski quickly. I’d heard from locals that it didn’t go.  That it ended in a cliff. I hoped the new snow […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: Wind Buffed Goodness

Cerro Catedral in Bariloche, Argentina has been treating us very well. Today was our 6th powder day in a row. It only snowed a little bit last night, but it came with big wind and it was cold.  It snowed down below the village. Up high on Nubes, the wind had buffed things out and the snow was delicious. We […]

And One Day it Snowed in Argentina… A Lot… | Before & After Photos:

For the last three weeks, all we’ve done is talking about dryness, global warming, lack of snow. We’ve spend entire nights without sleeping, just staring at the computer, waiting forecasts to show some snow. We’ve screamed, we cried, we cursed every ski resort; we prayed every existent God. But nothing happened. Snow wouldn’t show up. Most people will never understand […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: Violently Bluebird

Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina experienced an impeccable day today. No wind, warm temps, good snow, great times. Southern aspects are still holding chalky, powdery snow. North faces have fun sun cooked pow. In bounds skied great today in the sun. Nubes was skiing well, Del Bosque even had some huckable cliffs in the soft afternoon snow. Our crew climbed up to the spires in La Laguna and dropped off the back – “Tower Chute” – for a long run into the Van Titter valley. The snow was powdery, chalky, and damn fast. The views from the mountain were […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: Mini Powder Day Strength Training

The author feeling the burn on the Nubes chair at Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina today.

Today was the kind of day I’ve been waiting for. A day where the top chair, Nubes (2,000-vertical-feet), the best chair on the mountain, was open, running fast, and had a few inches of new snow. These are the days that make you better – that make you strong. We had about 2 inches of new, dense snow on top of a firm layer that kept you on your […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: World Class Tree Skiing

Patagonia tree skiing.

The world’s best tree skiing? Maybe. Certainly the best tree skiing I’ve ever experienced anywhere… Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina received 3+ feet of snow on the upper mountain over the weekend. Today was sunny and bright and was likely than any single day we had here last season. There was snow to the bottom of the mountain (which we never had last season) today which meant you could ski the incredible old growth Lenga tree forests on the lower mountain. These trees are large, very widely spaced

Catedral Ski Resort in Bariloche, Argentina OPENS for the Season Today

Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina got a solid snowstorm yesterday that was enough to open them up for the season today. They were hoping to be open on June 20th, but had to wait a bit longer for the snow to fill in enough to make things right. Another reason they felt confident about opening today was the forecast. The forecast is showing a foot of new snow in the next 2 days. Catedral is our favorite place to ski in South America and we’ll be reporting at least weekly from this area all summer.

Bariloche, Argentina Backcountry Report: “Overexposed in Alaskita”

Snow spray on the lower fingers today.

Today was the first sunny day since Bariloche, Argentina’s 2-foot Monday storm. The storm was cold storm and things remained cold until today. I used the sunny weather to get out to my favorite backcountry zone in the area, Alaskita. I arrived on top of Alaskita at noon, exactly when things were heating up. I could feel it in the air and a bit in the snow. I could see the avalanche debris from a small avalache (likely caused by a small cornice collapse) near the bottom of the upper spines. It looked fresh. I felt that the upper spines of Alaskita […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: Mini-Powder-Days Galore

Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina has been getting small, daily storms for the past week. Just a few inches per day or so, but it’s been enough to give each day a mini refresh. The real key to having fun at a ski resort is being able to ski off-piste terrain hard. If you can charge and make speed check turns anywhere you like, you’re gonna have a blast. Today was that way. Yesterday was that way. The day before yesterday was like that. It’s been a fun week. Today, we saw the biggest snowfall […]

VIDEO: Bariloche, Argentina August Highlight Reel by SGT

This video was made by our friends at Sass Global Travel (SGT). We has nothing but powder here in Bariloche, Argentina during the first two weeks of August. SGT captured it well. The Southern Hemisphere provided the necessary winter weather for the first two sold-out sessions of the season. With less than desirable winter conditions elsewhere throughout the Andes, SASS figured out how to utilize the amazing alpine terrain at Cerro Catedral in Bariloche, Argentina. The skier crew started their summer shred with SASS’s standard avalanche awareness program and […]

Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: Cliff-Hucking Good

Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina was closed yesterday due to high winds and a wet storm. Snow levels were high. It likely rained to the top yesterday. As the storm was ending, it got cold and dropped some good snow. This morning was bluebird. I ran straight up Nubes and found ok snow. It was very wind pressed and punchy and I nailed a rock on my first lap. As I was coming down Nubes they opened the chair. I stayed and got in 3 more runs before deciding to check out La Laguna. When I got to Laguna I realized that […]
