Lake Tahoe Long Range Winter Outlook & El Nino Update

Here we go again. It’s hard not to get discouraged. The climate models looked so promising the last week of October, now not so much… California is sitting under an omega blocking ridge. An omega ridge is characterized by a low-high-low from west to east, which doesn’t break down very easily. NOAA’s North American Forecast for May 2014:

NOAA recently released their long range temperature and precipitation forecasts for the month of May, 2014 in North America. The temperature forecast they’ve created is showing above average temperatures in much of the USA’s western ski country. Which is fine. If it’s going to be spring skiing, it might as well be warm and nice out. Although, in some places this could lead to it not freezing at night, which is key to proper corn formation. Specifically, all of Alaska and most all of the West is forecast to have above average temperatures in May. Below average […]

NOAA’s January Forecast for the USA

forecast jan temps

NOAA’s long-range forecast for the month of January is showing us more of what we’ve been seeing in the USA. Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming are forecasted to receive above average precipitation. California is bulls eyed to receive below average precipitation.
High pressure has been dominating over California making for some of the best surf conditions in recent memory and some of the worst ski conditions in that same span of memories. What’s most shocking about this forecast is how […]
