Skier Triggered Avalanche Kills Skier in Austrian Alps Yesterday

What nice rolling alpine terrain

On Sunday afternoon at 2 pm, two skiers triggered an avalanche in the Hintertux Glacier area located in the Tyrol region of Austria on the Zillertal Alps. The two men who were locals of the region had been ski touring off-piste on a north-facing ridge in steep terrain at about 10,750′ elevation when the avalanche occurred. The older of the two men, age […]

Over-The-Head-Face-Shots @ Alta Yesterday | Video & Photos

I can confirm that is video is actually from yesterday, October 30th, 2013. The snow guns were most definitely on and the snow was finally getting deep enough to let the skis run a little more. Props to Nate and company for getting into Eagles Nest. That is a great early season zone if you have the stones to go ski it. It is mad stumpy in there:) This photo is from a zone near the the top of the Collins chair at Alta. […]

← This Happened Yesterday… | Sugar Bowl, CA Conditions Report:

The previous day was good skiing, and it called for a return trip to Sugar Bowl for some more preseason turns at Sugar Bowl. Eric Bryant and I didn’t have high expectations for great snow, as it was much warmer, but thought it’d be great to get out anyways. After a quick skin to the Mt. Lincoln summit, we ran into friend Mark Kendrick and his doggy Milo. There were a couple glorious looking tracks that someone had already left in […]

Chamonix Conditions Report Video: Nate Wallace & Pow in October

American-gone-feral Nate Wallace has already been skiing in Chamonix, France.  He’s been riding the Auguille du Midi and skiing down the Mer de Glace (sea of ice) glacier.  The skiing involves mostly mellow pow &sun-cooked-pow down a gentle glacier… but it goes on for miles and miles. It’s a heck of a lot better than the skiing most of us […]

Sugar Bowl, CA Conditions Report: 29” of Fresh Snow YESTERDAY | Photo Tour

It wasn’t the first snow we’ve seen in Tahoe this year, but it was the most skiable. The crew consisted of myself, Jamie Burge, Mark Kendrick, and Mark’s puggle Milo . We headed to Sugar Bowl the morning of October 29th after hearing that they had picked up 21-29”, while most other places around Tahoe had gotten a lot less than that. After a relatively short skin up Mt. Disney […]

Colorado Conditions Report: Fun, Variable Snow on Oct. 26th | Video & Photos

Saturday October 26th: Usually a ski day this time of year would be epic just due to it being so early in the season. In Colorado, we’ve been spoiled this year, though. This was the 5th Saturday I’ve ventured out in a row. It was the first without recent snow and the conditions were good, but not great. The snow […]

Tahoe = 5-12” on Ground & Still Snowing Hard! | Photo Tour:

A storm is raging in Lake Tahoe right now and has already dropped around 5” of new snow. 4-8” of snow were forecasted in the above 6,000 feet through Tuesday. We’ve already gotten up to 5” of snow in Tahoe at the lower elevations is some location in Tahoe and it’s not over yet. This morning, NOAA upped snow totals and added a Winter Weather Advisory saying that they were now expecting 6-10 inches of snow above 7,000 feet and 3-6 inches of snow at lake level. It appears that many upper elevation areas in Lake Tahoe got over a foot of snow. Ski resorts aren’t reporting totals yet due to them being closed. This […]

They’d initially planed to be open for the full weekend, but they’ve experienced higher than forecasted temperatures today which forced them to cancel snowmaking. 1st Day of Vermont Skiing, TODAY

photos and words by 1st Law Productions

After many days spent rushing out of work to get some sort of activity in before the light ends we have finally made it to ski season. And boy has it arrived. Usually we somehow convince ourselves that skiing on two to three inches covering rocks is “fun” but this morning was amazing. Skiing with FIS was certainly a wake up call, but we definitely got our vert in. After a quick run on the cliff trail we made our way up to the top of Nosedive. […]

October Corn Harvest on Mt. Baker, WA | VIDEO:

10,781-foot Mount Baker in Washington state got 13 feet of snow at its summit in late September. Since then, it’s been warm and dry. Perfect conditions for a high quality corn harvest. The “What’s Up” crew was on it and this video is what they have to show for it. Yes, we think they look weird, too. Gotta give it to them, though, […]

Yosemite Rim Fire Aftermath Rainbow Pools Did Not Burn Report & Photo Tour

This past Sunday, I drove up to see the damage from the Yosemite Rim Fire and to check if my favorite cliff jumping spot, Rainbow Pools, had been burned. The Yosemite Rim Fire was a highly destructive fire in August and September that burned over 257,000 acres (full fire statistics below). I took highway 120 up towards […]

Springtober in the North Cascades: Ski Touring Mt. Baker

With the ski season in the Rockies getting underway, those of us living in the top left (PNW) are feeling real, real itchy for some turns. With the last significant snow accumulation over two weeks ago and nothing but high pressure and sun in the forecast, a trip was planned to Ski Tour Artist’s Point, near Mt. Baker Ski Area. From Artist Point it was pretty obvious that it hadn’t snowed in a […]

Jumbo Pass, B.C. Conditions Report Video | 26” on Oct. 13th

These guys really wanted it. It’s a big hike to get up to the snow at Jumbo Pass, B.C. right now and these boys were rewarded handsomely for putting in the effort. The allure of 65cms (26”) of fresh was just enough to validate the dry forest slog up and down the hill. Conditions up top looked pretty fun, especially for October 13th. It’s amazing how many locations in the Western USA have yielded extremely early season snow this year. NOAA is saying that we have record snow coverage in North America this year and it’s not hard to […]
