2020-2021: The season of the backcountry.  COVID is still letting some resorts operate—for now. Blisters while backcountry skiing is something almost everyone has dealt with at one point or another. Aspen, CO Early Season Turns Come with Great Fun But Also Great Responsibility

Men going uphill

The last week or two we have seen numerous ‘anticipation posts’ and threads discussing the upcoming ski season.  While this has become a topic of great debate and some friendly jabs from resort to resort (Cataloochee Ski Area opening a day before Killington for first in the East), it is still EARLY in the season and that means uphill action […]

The Ever Growing Popularity of Resort Skinning

Skinning

The backcountry segment of the ski gear industry continues to explode as more people are choosing to skip the lift lines and expensive pass to earn their turns. Not everyone is headed deep into the wilderness though. As resort skinning is ever growing in popularity it’s creating new safety challenges and debates over access. At first thought it seems kind of stupid […]

Wet Dreams in the Hida Mountains: Shirouma Northeast Face

It’s no secret that skiing the alpine around here is something we fantasize about. It’s also no secret that it rains a lot here in the spring. Though the ‘wet dreams’ we don’t want can become a reality all too often in the spring, the ones we want are worth the wait. When rain gave way to snow up high, […]

Whistler Conditions Report: Slushy Days

essex

Within this past week Whistler has seen a lot of sun and some clouds mixed in here and there. The mornings may be a bit icy and hardpack all over the mountain but as long as you wait until the afternoon and ski the sunny slopes you will have a good time skiing off of the groomers. These warm temperatures have made the snow pretty fun by later in the day with some soft spring skiing. Shaded areas have remained firm but the grooming has been on point making it possible to rip super fast without any worries.
I have been skiing on 7th for most days and the Coulior on the skiers right side by the […]

Whistler Conditions Report: Sunny Days

lupton jump

Over the last week the sun has been shining down on Whistler Blackcomb. It has made it possible to go deep in the alpine, go shred some soft spring snow in the sun on resort, or hit up the park. As long as you played it smart and stayed away from the shaded skied out areas you were bound to have a sunny, fun time.

I spent most of the last week going to Blackcomb. The groomers were super-fast and smooth in the morning, so I would start the day with a few laps on 7th Heaven or Glacier. I have not spent much time laying in hard groomer turns before, but it […]

Rain runnels are prevalent on the glaciers as well as across the mountain […]
