Mt. Hood, OR, Backcountry Report: Early Season Turns on Crater Rock

Report from Monday, November 20, 2023 When I saw how snow-covered Mt. Hood looked from a plane this weekend, I knew it was time to get back on the slopes, especially after Sundayโ€™s weather. While Sundayโ€™s storm was not quite as big as we had hoped, there was still some new fluff to enjoy. I left Portland around 6:45 a.m. [โ€ฆ]

The Return Of The Mothership: Opening Day of KT-22 + Squaw Conditions Update

squaw conditions on kt-22

Life returned to normal yesterday at Squaw, as The Mothership (KT-22) fired up for the first time of the season.  Once things softened up, the skiing was all around ripping.  East Face, GS Bowl, even Rock Garden and the Snag Cliffs were all harboring some sweet turns once the sun got on them and softened things up (first thing in [โ€ฆ]

5+ Feet Of Snow and Big Avalanches: Squaw Photo And Video Conditions Update

Eagles Nest (now McConkey's) was looking prime today. KT soon to come???

We were all wondering if the reports from Squaw could be true, with rampant rumors of 5+ feet of snow for the upper mountain after this past storm. After closing on Sunday due to heavy rainfall, the doubts were even greater but today we were able to get into the upper mountain and we certainly received every bit of the 5+ feet. Shirley Chutes were almost buried, no more bushes sticking out, and huge slide paths were everywhere[โ€ฆ]

Squaw Conditions: Sleeper Pow Day With Freezing Snain And Milky Pow

While the storm didnโ€™t quite produce the totals we were hoping for yesterday at Squaw, things were still skiing quite well. With 3-5 inches of new snow over night, and some wind to smooth things out the skiing in Shirley lake was most ripping. And, Patrol opened up Rainbow Bowl for the first time [โ€ฆ]

Squaw Conditions Update + Photo & Video Tour: That Nasty R-Word

At least Mother Nature brought out a rainbow to brighten the spirits...

Just as was predicted, today started out nice and wet at Squaw Valley. With rain all the way to the top, things were looking (and feeling) a bit brutal. The rain started overnight and the meltdown has been fast and furious, with the little natural snow we have quickly receding. However, things are looking up moving into tonight and tomorrow [โ€ฆ]

Smooth Snow Sliding @ Alta: Conditions Update and Photo Tour

Tydel sending it at Alta

You know Alta is home to some ripping skiers when, almost a week after the storm, the runs are still buttery smooth and chalky. Heading out along the High Traverse, thereโ€™s a plethora of wind prepped surfaces harboring fast and grippy snow. Some of the best snow was found in High Boy, and the zone around the Bad News Cliffs still held [โ€ฆ]

Chalk, Powder, and Flips @ Alta, UT: Conditions Update and Photo Tour

While the West Coast is off to a slow start, and California continues to lack any signs of snow whatsoever, the conditions at Alta are absolutely ripping. With 40 inches of blower snow in the past week and cold temps the coverage is great and the snow is holding up fantastically. Patrol opened the Bad News Cliffs for the first time since the storm, which led to plenty of fresh turns and deep landings. [โ€ฆ]

Sunshine and Slick Snow @ Squaw Valley: Conditions Update + Photo Tour

Squaw Valley Tram Face without snow

After recovering from a stinky situation, Squaw has continued to ski well despite the startling lack of snow. With cold overnight temps they have been able to continue making snow, which has been our saving grace with daytime highs spiking into the mid 50โ€™s. Coverage on piste remains quite good (save a few spots in the Mountain Run) while skiing off piste has been all but shut down (with the closing[โ€ฆ]

Squaw Conditions Update and Photo Tour: Upper Mountain Closed Due to Stinky Conditions

While Tahoe remains dry and the forecast remains bleak, things took a turn for the worse at Squaw over the past two days with sewage problems reminiscent of the issues they encountered last year.  Today, the Mountain Run was closed from the start and by 10:30 they had shut down the entire upper mountain in order to attempt to continue [โ€ฆ]

Great Opening Day at Grand Targhee | 45th Anniversary Opening Day Conditions Report

Happy for winter! targhee opening day

Blue skies and powder abounded as Grand Targhee celebrated itโ€™s 45th season Friday by opening 100% of the mountain. With 97โ€ณ of snow so far this season, the forecasted temps of zero degrees did not deter skiers, and the line for first chair started growing in the wee hours. Thankfully, a Teton inversion saved every oneโ€™s delicate early season toes[โ€ฆ]

Squaw Conditions Update: Will they have enough snow to open in 12 days?

squaw valley High Campe snow conditions report

Squawโ€™s opening day is now just 12 days out, but by the looks of things its going to take a miracle to make that happen.  While up north the Pacific North West continues to get pummeled, we in California continue to wait patiently.  Over the past few days temperatures have hardly been low enough to make snow.  This raises the [โ€ฆ]

California Conditions Report: Mammothโ€™s 60th Anniversary Opening Weekend Wrap Up

Michelle Delumyea getting her afternoon ski carve on

Mammothโ€™s 60th Anniversay year got off to a great start this weekend, complete with good skiing, good coverage, good food, and good music.  They kept the early season stoke rolling as the masses made their way to Mammoth for a little weekend shredding.  Conditions remained great for early season, with well maintained and relatively rock free runs. With the coming [โ€ฆ]

Mammoth Opening Weekend Condition Report: Photo Tour

While it seems everywhere else in the lower 48 has already gotten pummeled, from 60โ€ณ inches in Jackson to deep pow in the Rockies, it just so happens that the skiing in Mammoth is ripping as well. While itโ€™s not deep pow, the coverage and amount of terrain they have is quite remarkable. Chair 1 is hands down the bread and butter of Mammoth at the moment (unless of course your more a fan of park, in which case Chair 8 was your ticket). There is ample coverage on all [โ€ฆ]

Jumbo Pass, B.C. Conditions Report Video | 26โ€ on Oct. 13th

These guys really wanted it. Itโ€™s a big hike to get up to the snow at Jumbo Pass, B.C. right now and these boys were rewarded handsomely for putting in the effort. The allure of 65cms (26โ€) of fresh was just enough to validate the dry forest slog up and down the hill. Conditions up top looked pretty fun, especially for October 13th. Itโ€™s amazing how many locations in the Western USA have yielded extremely early season snow this year. NOAA is saying that we have record snow coverage in North America this year and itโ€™s not hard to [โ€ฆ]

Alps Conditions Report Video | Long Lines in 3 Feet of Snow on Oct. 11th & 12th, 2013

The Alps got nuked on this weekend. HIntertux & Kaunertal in Austria were open and this weekend. Kaunertal had to close down on Friday after receiving 100cms (39โ€) of new snow. The boys at WePowder.com got out there and got after it and it was good. Mostly glacier skiing on mellow terrain, but whoโ€™s gonna complain about thousands of vertical feet of mellow, deep powder skiing in October? [โ€ฆ]

Front Range, CO Conditions Report Video: Storm, Sun, & Powder October 4th-6th

The Front Range of Colorado saw big snow over the weekend, or at least big enough snow. Doug Evans got out there and got after it. This early season is kinda getting nuts. Itโ€™s impressive how many different places in the Western North America that have had good ski conditions already. [โ€ฆ]

North Cascades, Washington Conditions Report Video: Powder & Sun on October 4th, 2013

Washington got hammered with snow last week. Mt. Baker proper reportedly got about 13-feet of snow on its summit. After reporting on that storm, we were really hoping people would let it settle, then get up there and ski it. Jacob & Andrew did. This video is of these guys skiing and riding in the North Cascades of Washington state on October 13th, 2013. Coverage looks exceptional and conditions look fun, especially for early [โ€ฆ]
