NOAA: 6-Inches of Snow Forecast for California Today

Yet another May storm is on it’s way to California today. The storm today is forecast to drop up to 6″ of snow above 8,000-feet in the Sierras. This will be the third storm to bring significant snow to the Sierra Nevada mountain since Cali’s first big storm this month on May 7th that dropped 12-18″ on Mammoth. Another storm this past Thursday dropped 5″ on Mammoth. Tahoe’s been getting it from these storms as well but no ski resorts are open up there. A Gulf of Alaska storm has dropped down from Alaska, picked up moisture off the Pacific Ocean, and is headed straight for California today and tomorrow. This storm is forecast to drop 4″ below 7,000′, 4-8″ of snow above 7,000′, and up to a foot along the crest. Snow levels will be as low as 5,500′ and as high as 7,000′. Lake Tahoe just got 4-8″ of snow yesterday. NOAA is now forecasting another 1-2 feet of snow for Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
